2009 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team

The 2009 Texas Tech Red Raiders football team represented Texas Tech University in the 2009 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The team was coached by Mike Leach during the regular season, and was coached by interim head coach Ruffin McNeill during the 2010 Valero Alamo Bowl. The Red Raiders played their home games at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. The football team competed in the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The Red Raiders finished the season 9–4, 5–3 in Big 12 play and won the Valero Alamo Bowl 41–31 against Michigan State.
On December 28, 2009, head coach Mike Leach was suspended by Texas Tech University pending investigation of alleged inappropriate treatment of Adam James, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver, and the son of former SMU Mustangs and New England Patriots running back Craig James. The suspension came after allegations that Leach treated Adam James unfairly following a mild concussion. Leach was terminated by the university on December 30, 2009. Defensive Coordinator Ruffin McNeill was named interim head coach and led the team during their appearance in the 2010 Alamo Bowl.
